LANE KEEPS SILENT ON LYNCHING PROBE
Makes Effort To Report To
Governor On Salisbury
Investigation
Attorney-General William Preston Lane, Jr., returned today from Salisbury, where he aided in the grand jury investigation of the lynching of a colored murderer, but declared he would not discuss the failure of the grand jury to act against the lynchers.
Although it was learned that he made efforts to communicate with Gov. Albert C. Ritchie to report on the jury's investigation, Mr. Lane said that there was nothing he could do now to bring about the indictment of the mob leaders.
Refuses All Comment
After he said that he would not comment on the grand jury's report. Mr. Lane was asked if he was satisfied with the outcome of the investigation.
"I will not comment," he repeated.
The grand jury heard from 128 witnesses who were summoned to tell about the lynching last December in the business center of Salisbury. It reported there "is absolutely no evidence that can remotely connect anyone with the instigation or perpetration of the murder of Matthew Williams."
