| ACTIVITY OF COMMUNISTS For the past few months Communists in the United States have been very active. Whenever a negro or a foreigner has been charged with the crime of murder or rape, up bobs the Communist under the guise of the International Labor Defense, and asserts, without any knowledge of the crime, that the accused man is innocent, and is being railroaded to imprisonment or death by a public devoid of justice or mercy. If the prisoner should happen to be a negro, south of the Mason and Dixon line, then the cry of race prejudice is raised. Race prejudice! This reminds us of a story about the old colored man out of work in Boston. He came from the far South, and for many years he was a popular waiter in one of the Southern hotels, but he was tempted by stories of social equality and big wages to go to Boston. v Arriving in that city he found jobs were scarce, and soon his savings had all been spent for his meagre existence, and then he was forced to ring door bells and beg for a bite of something to eat. He rang bell after bell, and he was given a most respectful and courteous hearing by the Bostonians, but no food. Arriving at a stately mansion, he pressed the electric bell with little hope of success; a tall grey-haired man with the goatee of a Southern Colonel, answered the bell. As the negro started his tale of woe the listener blurted out: "Nigga, go 'round to the back doa' and get something to eat. Don't you know betta than to ring heah ?" "Thank de Lawd!" exclaimed the old darkey "I'se found my folks at last!" Going to the kitchen he filled up on the fat of the land. He got cold comfort from Bostonians, and food and warmth from the Southerner who would not stand for social equality. No people on earth will do as much for the colored race as will the Southern people, and hundreds of thousands of them are living in peace and plenty in the South. There they are the mechanics. They build houses, paint houses, do plumbing, paper hanging and hunrdeds of mechanical accomplishments taught them by the white man. They get good wages, but they do not belong to Communistic labor organizations, and it is only the negro who returns from the North, with tales of social preferment and big wages, who occasionally leads a few of his race into trouble. And now the foreign Communist, the Slgovinski, the Witinsky, is butting in all over the country, but the Eastern Shore of Maryland gives warning that they shall not plant their seed of opposition to the American government on this soil! This God-favored paradise of Maryland is peopled by almost pure Anglo-Saxons, and they are patriotic, God-fearing, intensely American. We do not want the Communist and their breed here, and as Andrew Jackson would say "By the Eternal" we will not have them. |
