Witnesses Will Be Summoned Before Wicomico Grand Jury Today

Salisbury, Md., March 13—Approximately one hundred witnesses are to be called before the Wicomico county grand jury, which convenes in regular semi-annual session here tomorrow, to give testimony concerning the lynching of Matthew Williams, Negro, here last December 4, Levin Claude Bailey, State's Attorney, said today. The list, originally estimated at about seventy-five, has been increased to include the names secured through the questioning of several eyewitnesses of the hanging by Attorney-General William P. Lane and his assistants and by the office of Mr. Bailey. Also added were the names of persons whose testimony is considered pertinent by the Baltimore detectives who conducted a separate investigation in Salisbury immediately after the lynching.
Refuse To Give Hames Mr. Bailey declined to name those to be summoned, but stated that the complete list would be filed with the court tomorrow morning.
It would, he said, contain the names of many prominent persons who witnessed the hanging, many of whom already have given their statements to the Attorney-General. Several Negro witnesses also are included in the list, he added.
Mr. Bailey said the list did not include names of any Baltimoreans, although it was not limited to Wicomico county. Witnesses from Worcester and Somerset counties will be summoned also, he said.
A coroner's jury impaneled by Magistrate S. King White to investigate the lynching has not submitted a report. The inquest group, of which W. Arthur Kennerly is foreman, has not been assembled for the taking of testimony. Jury To Be Selected The grand jury will be selected from the following, whose names were drawn recently by Judge Joseph L. Bailey from the sixteen election districts in the county:
