Dr. Mitchell Tells
Of Inquiry On Shore
Dr. Broadus Mitchell, associate professor of political economy at the Johns Hopkins University, said last night that he had made a trip to Salisbury for the purpose of the inquiry
two weeks after the lynching of the Negro.
He spent from Friday to Sunday in the Eastern Shore town, he said, and talked to approximately a dozen persons who claimed to have intimate knowledge of the lynching. Among them, he said, were ministers, several Negro residents, Sheriff G. Murray Phillips, members of the police force and two bank presidents.
While his original report contained the names of the two persons who made efforts to halt the mob from the hanging and the burning, Dr. Mitchell said that he did not feel at liberty to make them public since the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in Amer-ict had omitted them from the publication of the abstract of his report.
