2 GOVERNORS ACT ON LYNCHINGS ON MESSAGES FROM IT. A. A. C. P.
New York, Dec. 12.- The Governors of two states in which there have been recent lynchings, Maryland and West Virginia, are giving assurance of prompt and vigorous action to apprehend and punish the lynchers, in response to telegrams sent by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peonle.
Governor Albert C. Ritchie of Maryland writes to the N.A.A.C.P. in response to its recent telegram:
"The State authorities are talcing all measures they can to apprehend the perpetrators of the Williams lynching. I enclose you editorial from this morning1s Baltimore Sun, summarising the situation so far as the steps I am taking in the matter are concerned."
The editorial reveals that on December 5, Governor Ritchie" ordered the Attorney-General to prosecute the members of the Salisbury mob which had lynched the Negro, Matthew Williams."
Concerning Governor William G. Conley, of West Virginia, T. G. Nutter of Charleston, member of the N.A.A.C.P. National Board of Directors, telegraphs:
"Governor thoroughly aroused over dastardly crime and is making a thorough-going investigation. Three brothers under arrest and have confessed their participation in the crime, A special grand jury may be called and number indictments are expected to be returned. Governor answered your wire today. Letter follows. The committee waited on him today."
