| BRUCE DEFENDS EAST SHORE BALTIMORE, Jan. 30.—Former U. S. Senator William Cabell Bruce stands today a champion of the mental and spiritual qualities of Eastern Shore people, even though he denounces the recent lynching of Matthew Williams, negro, in Salisbury. In a letter to a Baltimore newspaper, Bruce contends that he canvassed the eastern peninsula three times in political races, and was brought into intimate contact with its people. His letter was an answer to the statement of Dr. Broadus Mitchell, who, in a report made at the request of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, referred to the Eastern Shore as "mentally and spiritually backward." |
