COMMUNIST GROUP ASSAILS COURT AND GRAND
JURY; DEMANDS IMPEACHMENT JUDGE BAILEY
Assailing the Circuit Court and the Wicomico county grand jury, the Baltimore branch of the International Labor Defense today sent the following telegram to Judge Joseph L. Bailey:
"Prominent citizens lynched Mathew Williams December 4. Judges and the entire Eastern Shore aristocracy gave repeated encouragement to mobs. These very same citizens now sit on the Grand Jury to investigate the lynching. Your remarks to the Grand Jury about the International Labor Defense justify our belief (that the Shore mob leaders will be well covered, with you investigating our organization instead. The International Labor Defense regards an investigating body without negroes and poor farmers on it as a lynch jury. We demand that a committee of negroes and white workers be permitted to investigate the lynch-
ing and also investig(ate the Grand Jury to learn whether any of its members were part of the lynch mob leaders."
Judge Bailey had not received the telegraph when its text was given to him by The Associated Press. When the message arrives, the jurist said it would be turned over to Chief Judge John R. Pat-tison for the latter to decide whether it should be held in contempt of court.
The same communist organization also dispatched a telegram today to Governor Ritchie demanding the impeachment of Judge Bailey because of his manner in giving his charge to the Grand Jury yesterday. Judge Bailey "insulted" the organization the telegram stated, by referring: to it instead of asking action a-gainst the lynchers.
Governor Ritchie could not be reached this afternoon for comment.
