HINT TO MR. BAILEY
In a perfectly inexcusable editorial The Sun yesterday resurrected the ghost of Mathew Williams and repeated what has already been said a thousand times over: That a thorough investigation should be made into the .hanging of the confessed murderer here on December 4.
But The Sun goes farther than many of us. It says the leaders of the mob are known. In this respect, The Sun's editor has us one up. We do not know any mem bers of the mob who took part in that affair. Nor do we know anyone who knows', or whose friends know, any members of the mob.
Now if The Sun is really serious in wanting to have a thorough investigation why does not its editor give the information in his possession to State's Attorney Bailey or Attorney General Lane. Why withhold factsi which might prove of value?
And Henry L. Mencken, whose scorn for everything that is of the Eastern Shore knows no bounds, writing in The Evening Sun has twice said every school child in the city knows the names of the mob leaders. Has he, or The Evening Sun, made this* information available to the investigators?
We suggest Mr. Bailey issue a subpeona for Mr. Mencken and the unnamed editorial writer of The Sun and demand them to testify under oath before the coroner's jury.
Upon second thought, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Lane probably hold the opinions expressed a few days ago by leading business men of Baltimore, viz Herr Mencken and the Sunpapers are irresponsible and no credence can be placed in what they say. It would, therefore, be like injecting a burlesque act into an otherwise serious affair.
The Sunpapers are becoming notorious for just such hokum. Yet we do feel that Mr. Bailey and the jurors will be doing themselves an injustice if they fail to call their bluff.
One thing is certain, regard-leas of the eventual outcome of the investigation, it will he criticized—and in well-couched phrases—toy just such blatant irrespon-sibles in Baltimore.
