MARYLAND'S OBLIGATION
T AW-ABIDING citizens in Maryland and elsewhere will welcome the assurance of Governor Ritchie and other officials that noTTJIffyiSSiajs but all identifiable members of the mob responsible for the lynching last week will be vigorously prosecuted. This is said to be the first disgrace of its kind for Maryland in twenty years. That fact is all the more reason why the State should mete swift and sure punishment to those who substitute mob violence for the due processes of the law.
For several weeks before this disgraceful affair in Wicomico County there had been muttered threats of mob violence along the Eastern Shore of Maryland as an outgrowth of two other cases. The forces of law and order have been fighting- against this menace. For a time they seemed successful, even to the point where changes of venue would not be necessary. But this lynching shows the particular need at this ;time for stern measures against mob violence lest it again break out when the two pending cases come to trial.
