Maryland's Job
A Negro inja Maryland town shot his em ployer because the wages paid him were no satisfactory. The employer was talking ove the telephone when the Negro entered his office and fired the fatal shot. The Negro then turned the pistol upon himself and fell wounded to the flobr. But he staggered up and ran, was followed by the son of the murdered man and again wounded. Then he was picked up and taken to a hospital.
A mob of townsmen appeared at the hospital within a few minutes, seized the wounded man, took him to the streets, marched him just ou side the town and hanged him, afterward se ting his body on fire with gasoline and then burying the remains.
Governor Ritchip has directed the attorney general of tKest^e to make a searching investigation and proceed with prosecutions. Much indignation is voiced over the lynching because it is quite certain that the assailant would have been punished speedily in a legal manner. What is to be done, however, to a crowd of 1,000 persons is a job that Maryhj has to settle.
