GRAND JURY IS NEARING El OF LYNCHING PROBE
Only About Half a Dozen
More Witnesses To
Be Heard
Salisbury, Md., March 17, (IP).— Only a half dozen witnesses tonight remained to be heard as the Wicomico county grand jury brought to a close the third day of its investigation into the lynching here last December i of Matthews Williams, negro, for the murder of his white employer. State's Attorney Levin C. Bailey said that the action of the grand jury would be final and that there would be no session of the coroner's jury, to fix responsibility for the hanging.
The jury was informed during the day that one of two negroes who were in the ward with Williams in the Peninsula Gensral Hospital when he was snatched from his bed and hustled across the street to his death had since died and the second could not be located.
The State's Attorney and Attorney General William Preston Lane, Jr., who is assisting him, at the request of Governor Ritchie, said that they believed that the investigation would be completed tomorrow and the jury complete its disposition of the case.
