My Maryland
The tyrant foot now on thy shore, my Maryland, is the mob which, with the brutality characteristic of mobs, burned a negro murderer after it had hanged him. This was no gallant act in vindication of the honor of womanhood or anything like that. The sex sublimation of mob brutality has about lost excuse. A white man was murdered. Instead of the murderer being as usual a white man, it is a black man. The murderer is safe in the grip of tbfe law; but the mob does not want justice. It wants only to vent that brutality in itself which it sets out to punish in another. So another lynching is chalked up against the American nation.
The governor of Maryland is a man of statesmanlike record, such a record that he is strongly supported in some quarters as a candidate for a presidential nomination. The quality of Governor Bitchiajgill have its most revealing expression in the way he goes about it now to vindicate the good name of his state.
