GRAND JURY PROBING SALISBURY LYNCHING
Have Called 100 Witnesses On Lynching of Mathew Williams, Last December
The Wicomico County Grand Jury in session this week have called more than 100 witnesses in the probing of the lynching of Matthew Williams, negro, confessed slayer of Daniel J. Elliott, which occured in Salisbury, last December.
The findings of the Grand Jury have been kept secret but it has been learned with reasonable certainity that none of the ladies of the mob were recognized by the witnesses.
The International Labor Defense League, which have been active from the first, made their presence felt this week, when they sent a telegram to Governor Ritchie demanding the impeachment of the circuit judge, on the grounds that he had attempted to divert the attention of the pury from the lynching to the activities of the Communists. The Governor has made no reply to the telegram.
Thursday afternoon, it appeared reasonably certain that no one would be indicted.
