Salisbury, Md„ March 17-The Wicomico county grand jury today heard a dozen more witnesses in its investigation of the lynching of Matthew Williams, colored, for the killing of his employer, Daniel J. Elliott, and prepared to recall several of those already questioned,
Attorney-General W. Preston Lane, Jr., assisting State's Attorney Levin C. Bailey in the inquiry, said at the close of the morning session of the jury that some o fthose who have testified would be heard again, but did not amplify his statement. He did not give any reason for the action.
95 Already Heard
State's Attorney Bailey said yesterday that he expected to have the parade of more than 120 witnesses into the jury room completed today. The dozen heard at today's pre-luncheon session brought to nineyt-five the number questioned.
The officials did not say which of the three angles of the investigation prompted the recall of the witnesses. Judge Joseph L. Bailey, in his charge to the jury, instructed it to investigate not only the lynching, but the activities of an "outside organization" prior to the killing of Mr. Elliott.
It was reported, after the murder and lynching, that a Communist organization had held meetings in Salisbury and incited the colored population against whites. Judge Bailey's charge to the jury was the only public official recognizance of these reports.
Lane said he did not know when the inquiry would be completed, but cast doubt on success of plans to end it today.
