Miss Helen V. Wise, superintendent of the hospital, from whom the colored man was taken by members of the mob that hanged him, was among the witnesses called before the grand jury.
"Wasting" Of County Funds To Be Probed
Salisbury, Md., March 15 (^—Another big job is before the Wicomico county grand jury, which began its deliberations today.
Besides charging the jury to delve into the lynching of Matthew Williams, colored, Judge Joseph L. Bailey instructed the jurymen to also investigate the levying and spending of the county's funds. |
Judge Bailey said that between $100,000 and $150,000 has been Illegally levied and "woefully spent" in the county during the past year. He did not elaborate upon the charge and did not say how the funds were spent and for what purpose.
Saying that it is not within the power of the jury to correct these evils outside of the county, the jurist told the body: "We are levying money, we are taking from the hard-earned pockets of our toilers, of our citizens and spending in waste and spending in unlawful purposes too much money, and the public officials that are responsible for it should be aroused from their slumbers."
