Ritchie's Chances Uninjured, He
Claims To the Editor or The Evening Sun—Sir:
To hear some of the statements about Ritchie's chances being killed because of the unfortunate lynching affair is disgusting. He should have been at Annapolis at tending to his duties, say the proponents of such a statement. Ritchie's chances for the Presidency never looked' better than they do at present. Consider the ovations he received at Boston and at Pittsburgh. What about the honors they are paying him at Chicago? Surely, these ovations and honors are not for naught. One hears of Roosevelt as the outstanding man. If we were to take the word of the New York Governor's admirers, there would be no need for a Democratic convention. Roosevelt would rest easier if Ritchie weren't in the race. And what's more, Ritchie isn't going to step aside just because he isn't New York's choice.
Furthermore, the case of Orphan Jones seems to have involved Communist organizations and Communist attorneys. Are we supposed to protect such counsels? Is the State supposed to sanction such aid for the defense of criminals? Whatever the situation may be, the lynching will not affect Ritchie's chances.
