"It is also a stronghold of prohibition." I beg to contradict that statement completely, because the lower counties are among Ritchie's most ardent supporters. I am in favor of prohibition, but I make this statement just to expose Mr. Mencken's utter ignorance of prevailing conditions.
Statistics show that of fifteen lynch-ings in the last forty-five years, Friday's was the only one in the last twenty-five years. Yet Mr. Mencken claims that it was a "natural culmination of a degenerating process for years, at least since the World War."
If a Negro had murdered in cold blood four sleeping white people in Carroll county and another Negro offense had occurred in Harford county, I wonder what the reaction of Baltimore county would be if a black man walked into the office of one of its prominent citizens and shot him dead with practically no motive whatsoever. Meanwhile, no steps had been taken by the law to punish the other two culprits.
But my indignation reaches its hi ghest pitch when the people of the Shore are declared to be morons, uneducated and barbaric. I admit that its isolation is an inconvenience, but is it so much more uncivilized than the Western Shore of Maryland?
Any man who deliberately accuses the Shoremen of stupidity and attempts to destroy the age-old reputation of the "land of evergreens" should extend a humble apology to the people of that land and retreat to seclusion for the rest of his days. Claude J. Merrill.

The reprehensible njelhods asr^sed by yourselves is beyond my conception; 'tis bad enough for your editorials to carry scurrilous untruths, exaggeration of conditions : aye, wilfull, misleading falsification of facts. Why don't you, as honorable men, give this matter the consideration it deserves? Why don't you print the real cause as well as the effect?
No, sensational matter is your long suit, and whether they be truths or false as hell itself, you gobble them up with the avidity and gluttonous joy of the proverbial "scandle monger.",
In evidence of the truth of the above. one has only to read on December 7 some of the ideas of one Mencken—statements anything but true, anything but right, anything but facts.
No, instead of getting the real facts, you prefer the unauthentic sensational part of the game, looking forward as your reward to the commendations of the "Maryland branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom." Well, that may be all right; my ignorance in the premises will be excusable if I am wrong; but that brand does sound fishy to me, it does smell of the I. W. W. communistic agitators.
