Dr. Holloway Says Ignorance
Of Situation Was Shown;
Denial Asked
The following statement was sent to The Baltimore News by Dr. William J. Holloway, head of ,the State Normal School in Salisbury: Dr. Wm. J. Holloway
The universal protest of Eastern Shore folk against the rabid mouth-ings of H. L. Mencken, a journalist once respected as a keen, fair and intelligent critic, in latter times fallen into the wallow of blatherskite, is not a case of the wincing of a "galled jade," but rather a righteous, indignant protest against a manifest and flagrant misrepresentation of the real situation.
Ignorance Charged
Mr. Mencken patently reveals an "abysmal ignorance" of the true state of affairs existent in a section of Maryland noted for its hospitality and charm, where many of the best people of Baltimore delight to visit.
In his knowledge of Eastern Shore culture and refinement he is pilloried as a fossilized pterodactyl.
In his opinion of our citizenry he reveals himself as a self-righteous pharisee.
Mr. Mencken's vitriolic effusion concerning the people of the Eastern Shore is greatly to be deplored. He has hurt himself immeasurably; in no less a degree has he hurt the paper for which he writes and, most lamentable of all, he has hurt the people of Baltimore, his own friends and neighbors.
Denial Wanted
Just as this shining light of a "kul-tur," denied less fortunate souls, is uable to distinguish between righteousness and evil in this section, thus damning all and sundry of our people to the same bottomless pit, so the "morons," the "porcine, knavish politicians," the "hacks," the "prehensile professional patriots," the "Simian of- : fice seekers," the "poor white trash," the "snooping soul savers," the "blind leaders of the blind," who, he says, inhabit this "unhappy region," these "swamps," these "lush stamping grounds," this "dismally isolated, poverty-stricken" part of the State, conclude that Mr. Mencken is speaking for the people of the City of Baltimore.
They await a denial of this from the "decent, enlightened" people of the "Monumental City."
