Grand Jury
SALISBURY, Md., March 16 (A*). •—The Wicomico county grand jury today continued to call witnesses from a list of 102 subpoenaed persona as it began the second day of Its investigation of the lynching here last December 4 of Matthew Williams. negro, a few hours after he dfshot and killed his white employer, paniol J. Elliott.
Twelve witnesses were examined yesterday afternoon including G. MtlJTBy Phillips, Wicomico county tehcriff, but the nature of their tes-jttraony or the angles the iavesllgv ftio:i was taking were kept secret.
The jurors had been instructed Shy Judge Joseph L. Bailey to look fanto all circumstances surrounding kill lynching and the action of an f'outside organization'' on the Eastern Shore.
I While that "outside organization ' hvas not mentioned by name by the (court, the International Labor Defense League said it had been in the |mind of the jurist and in a telegram (to Governor Ritchie, Louis Berger, (secretary of the League demanded (the impeachment of the judge. Barker said the League had been in ^ulted by the court.
The League also protested the selection of jury declaring it had Jbeen "hand picked to perfect •¦lynch rule." The League representative in a telegram to Judge IBailey complained that there were Wo negroes on the jury or represen jjatives of the poor working classes.
