RAND JURY IS MAKING PROBE OFLYNCHING
One Hundred And Two Witnesses Called For Thorough Inquiry
SALISBURY, Md., March 15, (JP). —Wicomico county, supported by the state, today began a grand jury investigation of the lynching at Salisbury last December 4, of Matthew Williams, negro, and called together 102 witnesses including state, county and city police, public officers, doctors, nurses and local business men as witnesses.
Attorney General William Preston Lane, Jr., who at the request of Governor Ritchie, investigated the hanging, was here with Deputy Attorney General Anderson, who has worked on the case for months.
Charged with the investigation by Judge Joseph L. Bailey of the Circuit Court, the jury will study outside influences and events contributing to the lynching, the 14th in Maryland in 45 years. A. Percy White is foreman.
