DR. AMES SPEAKS OF EASTERN SHORE
Dr. Joseph S. Ames, President Of Johns Hopkins University, De dared The Report Of Dr. Broadus Mitchell Should tfot Be Taken As The Point Of View Of The University.
Salisbury, Md., Feb. 10- (7P)—Dr. Joseph S. Ames, President of Johns Hopkins University, in a letter to the Salisbury Times, declared the report of Dr. Broadus Mitchell, associate Professor of political economy at the institution, concerning the lynching of Matthew Williams, negro, here last Dec. 4, should not be taken as the point of view of the University. The letter was published yesterday by the newspaper-
In his re,port which was made to the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, Dr. Mitchell described the Eastern Shore as "backward in its mental and spiritual development."
Dr. Ames said he had spent much time along the Eastern Shore and had not found any whom "he did not like.
'I have never come in contact with any question dealing with religion or politics when I have been there," he continued, "but my whole reaction toward the civilization of the Eastern Shore is that I think it is fine and I often have said that I would like to live there-
"I never have any desire to interfere with anyone else's opinion nor do I have any desire to change anyone's opinion. The regret I have in regard to Dr. Mitchell and all the publicity in connection with it is that some .people may associate this University with his point of view"
Dr. Ames said Dr. Mitchell did not make any investigation or study under the aus,pices of the University or "even with the knowledge of the University," Dr. Mitchell's work, said the President, was simply that of an individual.
