'GOV. RITCHIE AND THE NEGROES"
The local Prohibition organ came a cropper when it sought to embarrass Governor Ritchie, oŁ Maty-land, the outstanding "wet" candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination.
In an editorial headed "Mr." Ritchie and the Negroes," the 'Eagle" charged Governor Ritchie with a flat refurial of protection to i Baltimore Negro lawyer, counsel 'or a Negro accused of murder in .he Eastern Shore area.
The "Eagle" charged that the jovernor's refusal led to another ynching.
In a letter to the "Eagle," Gov-;rnor Ritchie said his attention was jailed to the editorial which wasj completely contrary to the facts. j in place of a flat refusal to the lawyer in question, Governor Ritchie' said that as soon as he heard that the lawyer had been molested he ;ot in immediate communication'

Chief of Police of the town and in- j formed him that the local authorities were able to handle any situation of the same kind.
As for the subsequent lynching case,' Governor Ritchie said the editorial was completely in error. He had taken steps in regard to both cases. As a result of investigations made under his direction the Attorney General of the State is at present in Salisbury performing the duties which the situation calls for. The "Eagle" wants to disqualify the Governor as a Presidential candidate by hinting that the Negro vote in certain States holds the balance of power and naturally would be against Governor Ritchie should he be nominated.
As a matter of fact, Governor Ritchie has been commended for his action in the premises by the Pennsylvania State Negro Council and by a large Negro organization in Chicago. Also as a matter of fact, 75 per cent, of the Negro vote is normally Republican.
Governor Ritchie's "wet" views are obnoxious to the owner of the^. "Eagle," who is a declared "fay" and a contributor to Projrfbition funds, _y*~ ^*-^—-^ x
