Governoj^tUtchie of Maryland, earnest advocate ot~- State rights, now has opportunity to show that a State can an<' will do justice and sternly rebuke mob law. The situation is identical with many other instances where the helplessness or indifference of a State has caused a rather deep feeling that the Federal government must be given power to deal with lynchers. As Governor Ritchie strongly opposes such extension of Federal powers his course in this matter of the hanging of a Negro accused of murder iE being watched. That he will do all that is possible to bring the guilty ones to account may be taken for granted for he realizes that the members of the mob are now just as guilty of murder as the man they brutally executed in defiance of the law which was entirety competent to deal with
