LYNCHING JURY IS EXPECTED TO REPORT TODAY Wicomico State's Attorney Looks For Findings In Afternoon 21 MORE WITNESSES HAVE BEEN CALLED Salisbury Police Chief Is "ore Investigat Nearly Hour Before Investigators By FBA.XK K. Salisbury, Md., March 16—Expectation that the Wicomico county grand jury will complete its investigation of the lynching of Matthew Williams, Negro, and make known its finding tomorrow afternoon was voiced today by Levin C. Bailey, State's Attorney. Seventy witnesses testified today and twenty-one more had been summoned to tell the jury what they know of events connected with the lynching of Williams, who shot to death Daniel J. Elliott, Salisbury lumber dealer, December 4. Mr. Baile,y said the jury, which formally opened its investigation Tuesday, is willing to devote any amount of time to the inquest and to summon before it anyone whose name is presented in good faith as having knowledge which might bear on the subject. Police Chief Quizzed Among those who appeared before the jurors today was Police Chief N. H. Holland, of Salisbury, who was on guard at the main entrance of the Peninsula General Hospital when the lynchers entered by a side door and took Williams to the Courthouse Square, where the Negro was hanged from a tree. Mr. Holland was questioned nearly an hour this morning. Throughout the morning and afternoon sessions a double stream of witnesses flowed up and down the Courthouse steps. The naming of twenty-one more persons to appear swells the total list prepared by Mr. Bailey to 123. Yesterday the jury questioned twelve, including physicians and nurses at the hospital.
