No Date Set For Coroner's Investigation Of Negro Williams' Death

Salisbury, Md., Jan. 14—Levin C. Bailey, State's Attorney, today denied published reports that a special session of the grand jury would be called to investigate the lynching of Matthew Williams, Negro, here on December 4.
Mr. Bailey said he had made no plans to ask for a special session of the grand jury and had anticipated no such move. The March term of the Circuit Court, which calls together a new jury, convenes on March 14 Inquest Delayed
A coroner's jury was impaneled December 5 to fix responsibility for Williams' death, but the inquest has been delayed while Mr. Bailey, W. Preston Lane, Attorney-General, and G. C. A. Anderson, his assistant, questioned witnesses in an endeavor to establish the identity of the mob leaders.
Baltimore detectives have spent several weeks at Salisbury seeking evidence to place before the coroner's jury. The prosecutors also have questioned several score witnesses. The evidence obtained has not been made known.
No date has been set tor holding the inquest. W. Arthur Kennerly, former Mayor, is foreman of the coroner's jury and Magistrate King White, of People's Court, is acting coroner.
Investigation Going On, Attorney-General Says
W. Preston Lane, Jr., Attorney-General, yesterday refused to discuss the Salisbury lynching except to say he was pursuing the investigation.
A resolution deploring the lynching and signed by thirty-one Methodist Episcopal ministers of Baltimore and vicinity has been drawn up and circulated by the Rev. Don S. Colt, pastor of Govans Methodist Episcopal Church.
The resolution asserted that the signers joined with the better-thinking people of Salisbury in expressing their horror at the recent hanging and looked with confidence on the citizens of that municipality to redeem the good name of their community and the State.
