Salisbury, Md., Dec. 18—Attorney-General William P. Lane and his assistant, G. C. A. Anderson, returned to Salisbury this afternoon and immediately resumed the investigation into the lynching of Matthew Williams here on December 4. Eyewitnesses are being questioned by the Attorney-General, Mr. Anderson and Levin C. Bailey, State's Attorney for Wicomico county.
Mr. Lane stated that he will endeavor to get statements from as many witnesses as possible even if the number reaches into the hundreds and that all such information will be turned over to the inquest body.
Holds Matter Confidential
He refused to disclose the nature of the information which is contained in these statements, holding it as confidential until the investigation is completed.
Mr. Lane and his assistant expects to remain here for several days gathering all possible information in connection with the case in order *o have a complete file to turn over to the coroner's jury.
That body will not be assembled until the investigation has been completed, he said.
Tivo Baltimore Detectives Accompany Lane To Shore
Accompanied by two Baltimore detectives, William Preston Lane, Jr., Attorney-General, yesterday went to Salisbury to renew his inquiry into the lynching of Matthew Williams, Negro, two weeks ago.
Before leaving for the Eastern Shore he conferred with Levin C. Bailey, State's Attorney for Wicomico county, who also returned to Salisbury in the afternoon.
The Attomey-Ge- 1 said he did not know how long he would remain at Salisbury.
For two days at the beginning of the week Mr. Lane was in Salisbury interviewing city and county officials and persons who witnessed the lynching. He came back to Baltimore late Tuesday to appear before the Court of Appeals the next day in the appeal from an order of the Circuit Court of Worcester county transferring the Yuel Lee trial to Cambridge. Lee, alias Orphan Jones, a Negro, is charged with murdering a family of four at j Taylorsville in Worcester county.
