"Very Much Regretted"
The Rev. Kingman A. Handy, pastor of McCormick Memorial Baptist Church, said:
"The affair is very much to be regretted, and during the trying hours which our citizens feel so keenly, it behooves us to keep our minds occupied with high and noble things."
Mr. Handy was pastor of the Salisbury Baptist Church several years ago. Calls Deed Dark Blot
The Rev. Dr. Don S. Colt, pastor of Govans Methodist Episcopal Church, 6aid in a sermon last night:
"The lynching at Salisbury was a dark blot upon the fair name of the State of Maryland and a crime against a brother race that has its home among us. The good citizens of the State ought to rise in burning protest against It and the leaders of the mob ought to be brought to immediate justice."
The Rev. A. Brown Caldwell, pastor of Walbrook Presbyterian Church, in a "prayer for pardon," referred to those who did the lynching as persons "who had judged and executed in ruthless and unholy manner" and called them "a heedless mob that had wreaked sodden vengeance." Says All Are Cursed
The Rev. Hardigg Sexton, pastor of Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church, said:
"By that which has been done in the sovereign free State of Maryland there has been laid upon every citizen of this Commonwealth, whether they sit in a Christian church this morning or not, the curse of God's righteous wrath for a fiendish crime."
