GEN. LANE SILENT ON LYNCHING PROBE
Investigation Hampered by Recent Published Reports
Investigation of the lynching and burning of Matthew Williams, Negro, at Salisbury Dec. 6 is still in progress and Attorney General Lane, who has charge of the probe, has "no statement to make at the present time," he said today.
Mr. Lane indicated that recently published reports of conditions on the Eastern Shore by private investigators had hampered the progress of his investigation by renewing sectional ill-feeling in Salisbury and in other communities on the Eastern Shore.
Portions of one such report, prepared by Dr. Broadus Mitchell, of the Johns Hopkins University faculty, were announced recently by a New York church organization for which it was prepared.
Mr. Lane's investigation is directed toward determining those responsible for the lynching and burning of the Negro.
